Gap Tags

Gaps within the full text of EEBO are represented by an ellipsis in square brackets [...]. However, where the reason for the gap has been identified, we have included a more meaningful symbol or piece of text (based on information from the TCP).

The following symbols/text have been used in EEBO:

	A single illegible letter. Displays as an olive-coloured bullet with no spacing around it.
	Two or more illegible letters. Displays as a gray-coloured ellipsis between two square brackets.
	A section of illegible text. Displays as an olive-coloured 3-dot ellipsis with no spacing around it.
	A single illegible letter followed by an undefined span of continuous, illegible text. Displays as an olive-coloured dot and a 3-dot ellipsis with no spacing around them.
	An illegible word. Displays as olive-coloured diamond between two half-brackets.
	Musical notation. Displays as red musical notes within half-brackets
	An undefined symbol. Displays as a red open square within a pair of half-brackets.
	Two undefined symbols. Displays as a divided red open square within a pair of half-brackets.
	An undefined span of illegible text. Displays as an olive-coloured 3-dot ellipsis between two half-brackets.
	Mathematical notation. Displays as the word 'math' within half-brackets.
	One foreign word. Displays as the red text '[1 word non-Latin alphabet]'.
	An undefined number of foreign words. Displays as the red text '[undefined span non-Latin alphabet]'.
	Intruder. Displays as a description in gray text in square brackets.
	Missing. Displays as a description in gray text in square brackets.
	Replacement. Displays as a description in gray text in square brackets.
	Duplicate. Displays as a description in gray text in square brackets.

Some special characters are represented as their entity name in curly brackets, e.g. {Saturn}, {north node}.
