Search Fields in EEBO

The following search fields are used in EEBO on the Basic Search, Advanced Search and Periodicals Search pages.

 Keyword(s) (Basic Search)

Searches for your term(s) within the full record.

If you are a TCP subscriber the Keyword(s) field on Basic Search searches for your term(s) within all EEBO records or the full text of each item that has been keyed to date. Use the Advanced Search to keyword search within records and/or keyed full text. The search terms are combined using the Boolean operator 'OR' by default.

Keyword(s) (Advanced Search)

Searches for terms within all the fields of records and/or keyed full text.

Keyword(s) (Periodicals Search)

Searches for terms within all periodical content.

Record keyword(s)

Searches for terms within all the fields of document records only. TCP subscribers only.

Full text keyword(s)

Searches for terms within all the fields of full text documents. TCP subscribers only.

Author keyword(s)

Searches for terms within the Author field only of EEBO documents. If you're unsure of the spelling of a word, consider using the Author browse index on the Select from a list page.

Note that searching on a non-inverted name form in the Author keyword(s) field will also retrieve the inverted form, e.g. you can type 'william shakespeare' to retrieve records for items where 'shakespeare, william' is the author.

A list of abbreviations used in the Author name field is available.

Author/editor keyword(s)

Searches for terms within author/editor fields in periodical content. If you're unsure of the spelling of a word, consider using the Author/Editor browse index on the Select from a list page.

Note that searching on a non-inverted name form in the Author/editor keyword(s) field will also retrieve the inverted form, e.g. you can type 'thomas archer' to retrieve records for items where 'archer, thomas' is the author or editor.

A list of abbreviations used in the Author/Editor name field is available.

Title keyword(s)

Searches for terms within the Title field only of EEBO documents. If you're unsure of the title of a work, consider using the Title browse index on the Select from a list page.

Subject keyword(s)

Searches for terms within the Subject field only of EEBO documents. If you're unsure of the subject of a work, consider using the Subject browse index on the Select from a list page.

Bibliographic number

Searches for the alphanumeric entry found in the Short-Title Catalogues: Pollard & Redgrave, Wing, or the Thomason Tracts.

A list of abbreviations used in the Bibliographic name / number field is available.

Imprint

Search for publisher, city of publication and date of publication. If you're unsure of the imprint details for a work, consider using the Imprint browse index on the Select from a list page.

Reel position

Search the reel number and position of the microfilm document. Early English Books Online is the online version of UMI's microfilm collections of the Short-Title Catalogues.

Illustration type

Search documents containing one of 14 different illustration types (or 6 in the case of Periodicals Search) using the multi-select list.

Customers who are joint subscribers to ECCO and EEBO should note that ECCO records contain only the following illustration types:

  • Chart
  • Coat-of-Arms
  • Illustrations
  • Map
  • Music
  • Portrait

Limit by date

You can restrict a search for a document within a particular date range. The default dates are 1473 - 1900, or 1641-1645 in the case of the Periodicals Search.

UMI collection

Search a individual UMI collection for documents. See which Collections you are subscribed to.

Source library

Search the library where the original document is held. "Cambridge", "Oxford", "Trinity College", and "Eton College" are some of the most common source libraries. If you're unsure of the source library for a work, consider using the Source library browse index on the Select from a list page.

Language

Search for documents published in a certain language.

Country of origin

Search for documents published in a particular country or countries.

Use the additional search boxes mentioned above to narrow your search to specific fields within records. You can either keyword search in fields, or browse and Select from a list exact terms to search.

Multiple terms within search boxes are treated as a phrase, unless separated with a Boolean AND, OR or proximity operator.

Limit To options (non-TCP subscribers)

Use the Limit to: pull-down options to limit your searches for keywords and terms in any of the search boxes to:

  • All items - searches for your term(s) within every record available in EEBO. The total number of records is indicated in parentheses.
  • Items with images - searches for your term(s) within records only for items that have document images available to be read on screen or downloaded in PDF format. The total number of items that have had images scanned to date is indicated in parentheses. New images are added to EEBO on a regular basis. Note that this option is not applicable to the Periodicals Search.
Limit To options (TCP subscribers)

Use the Limit to: pull-down options to limit your searches for keywords and terms in any of the search boxes to:

  • All items - searches for your term(s) within every record in EEBO or every full-text item that has been keyed to date. The total number of records and texts is indicated in parentheses.
  • Items with images - searches for your term(s) within records and full text only for items that have document images available to be read on screen or downloaded in PDF format. The total number of items that have had images scanned to date is indicated in parentheses. New images are added to EEBO on a regular basis. Note that this option is not applicable to the Periodicals Search.
  • Items with keyed full text - searches for your term(s) within the records or full text only of items that have been keyed to date. The total number of items that have been keyed into searchable full text is indicated in parentheses. Additional works are keyed and added to EEBO on a regular basis. By default all keyed items also have document images available to view; you do not have to limit those searches to Items with document images available.

In the Advanced Search, you can limit searches for full-text keywords within specific areas of text such as Tables of Contents, Verse or Letters.

Sort results and Display options
Use the Sort results and Display options at the bottom of the search screen to choose how your search results are sorted and how many records are displayed. Use your Search History to further refine or combine searches.
Selecting more than one item from a multi-select list

You can select multiple elements to search on from the Limit full text keywords within list on the Advanced Search (TCP subscribers only), the Language and Country of origin fields on the Advanced Search and the Illustration type field on the Advanced and Periodicals Search pages.

To select multiple elements to search on:

  • Highlight the first item in the list by clicking it with the mouse.
  • Hold down the CTRL key and click the next item in the list, and so on.

Alternatively if the items you wish to search for are next to each other in the list, you can select the first item in the list, then hold down the SHIFT key and click the last item in the list. All the items in between will be shown as highlighted.
