Search Fields in EEBOThe following search fields are used in EEBO on the Basic Search, Advanced Search and Periodicals Search pages.
Keyword(s) (Basic Search)Searches for your term(s) within the full record. If you are a TCP subscriber the Keyword(s) field on Basic Search searches for your term(s) within all EEBO records or the full text of each item that has been keyed to date. Use the Advanced Search to keyword search within records and/or keyed full text. The search terms are combined using the Boolean operator 'OR' by default.
Keyword(s) (Advanced Search)Searches for terms within all the fields of records and/or keyed full text.
Keyword(s) (Periodicals Search)Searches for terms within all periodical content.
Record keyword(s)Searches for terms within all the fields of document records only. TCP subscribers only.
Full text keyword(s)Searches for terms within all the fields of full text documents. TCP subscribers only.
Author keyword(s)Searches for terms within the Author field only of EEBO documents. If you're unsure of the spelling of a word, consider using the Author browse index on the Select from a list page. Note that searching on a non-inverted name form in the Author keyword(s) field will also retrieve the inverted form, e.g. you can type 'william shakespeare' to retrieve records for items where 'shakespeare, william' is the author.
Author/editor keyword(s)Searches for terms within author/editor fields in periodical content. If you're unsure of the spelling of a word, consider using the Author/Editor browse index on the Select from a list page. Note that searching on a non-inverted name form in the Author/editor keyword(s) field will also retrieve the inverted form, e.g. you can type 'thomas archer' to retrieve records for items where 'archer, thomas' is the author or editor.
Title keyword(s)Searches for terms within the Title field only of EEBO documents. If you're unsure of the title of a work, consider using the Title browse index on the Select from a list page.
Subject keyword(s)Searches for terms within the Subject field only of EEBO documents. If you're unsure of the subject of a work, consider using the Subject browse index on the Select from a list page.
Bibliographic numberSearches for the alphanumeric entry found in the Short-Title Catalogues: Pollard & Redgrave, Wing, or the Thomason Tracts.
ImprintSearch for publisher, city of publication and date of publication. If you're unsure of the imprint details for a work, consider using the Imprint browse index on the Select from a list page.
Reel positionSearch the reel number and position of the microfilm document. Early English Books Online is the online version of UMI's microfilm collections of the Short-Title Catalogues.
Illustration typeSearch documents containing one of 14 different illustration types (or 6 in the case of Periodicals Search) using the multi-select list. Customers who are joint subscribers to ECCO and EEBO should note that ECCO records contain only the following illustration types:
Limit by dateYou can restrict a search for a document within a particular date range. The default dates are 1473 - 1900, or 1641-1645 in the case of the Periodicals Search.
UMI collectionSearch a individual UMI collection for documents. See which Collections you are subscribed to.
Source librarySearch the library where the original document is held. "Cambridge", "Oxford", "Trinity College", and "Eton College" are some of the most common source libraries. If you're unsure of the source library for a work, consider using the Source library browse index on the Select from a list page. LanguageSearch for documents published in a certain language. Country of originSearch for documents published in a particular country or countries. Use the additional search boxes mentioned above to narrow your search to specific fields within records. You can either keyword search in fields, or browse and Select from a list exact terms to search. Multiple terms within search boxes are treated as a phrase, unless separated with a Boolean AND, OR or proximity operator. In the Advanced Search, you can limit searches for full-text keywords within specific areas of text such as Tables of Contents, Verse or Letters. Sort results and Display optionsUse the Sort results and Display options at the bottom of the search screen to choose how your search results are sorted and how many records are displayed. Alternatively if the items you wish to search for are next to each other in the list, you can select the first item in the list, then hold down the SHIFT key and click the last item in the list. All the items in between will be shown as highlighted. |
